Your role in helping us shape the future:

Working in a team environment, you will demonstrate sound systems knowledge of the fundamentals of spacecraft operations spanning all spacecraft bus subsystems; this to include attitude control, power, thermal, data handling and propulsion.

You must be able to apply professional engineering knowledge to the development, implementation, and maintenance of satellite operations systems and processes through the spacecraft lifecycle: Including design review, operations integration and handover, long-term operations through decommissioning.

Working from Intelsat's Tysons, VA facility, the successful candidate will develop, implement and maintain satellite systems during launch phase operations, in-orbit activities and quality assurance testing. Will perform routine testing and analysis and support the development of requirements for ground control systems. Will partner with more senior engineers to develop increased proficiency on satellite systems and subsystems

Are you up to the challenge?

  • Monitor the health of spacecraft systems and subsystems throughout the satellites lifecycle.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve system and subsystem deviations and anomalies.
  • Develop satellite operations procedures, products and processes based on manufacturer’s documentation and operations protocol.
  • Define, develop and execute command plans to institute spacecraft configuration changes.
  • Define and develop satellite system and subsystem requirements for ground network systems. This includes the development of test plans, conducting acceptance tests, and resolving issues.
  • Participate in a variety of spacecraft anomaly investigation and resolution activities.
  • Develop software tools, methods and procedures to improve testing and measurement capabilities.
  • Test and assess the viability/compatibility of new systems and equipment.
  • Perform on-call responsibilities.

Can you drive these processes?

  • Perform routine analysis to maintain satellite health.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve system and subsystem deviations and anomalies.
  • Perform testing and analysis of satellite systems and subsystems. This includes system design, leading or conducting system tradeoff studies, performing integration and test activities, and developing technical requirements.
  • Define and develop satellite system and subsystem requirements for ground network systems. This includes the development of test plans, conducting acceptance tests, and resolving issues. Ensure optimal interface of satellite and terrestrial protocols.
  • Develop and distribute reports summarizing technical analysis findings and recommendations.
  • Perform self-directed study.
  • Perform on-call responsibilities.

You should definitely have:

  • A Bachelor's of Science degree in a relevant field (such as Aerospace, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering), with at least one year of applicable experience. An advanced degree in the relevant fields of study will be accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of spacecraft operations spanning all spacecraft bus subsystems including attitude control, power, thermal, data handling and propulsion
  • Ability to work autonomously and perform self-directed research.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to express ideas clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles and practices across spacecraft applications of engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, thermal logic, computer application.
  • Ability to analyze time varying data in plots or tables for specific signatures.
  • Natural curiosity to understand how engineering systems function and to analyze performance.
  • Must be able to learn, research and apply knowledge from manufacturer training and provided documentation in order to support spacecraft systems and subsystems.
  • Must have a natural drive to understand how engineering systems function and an interest in analyzing operational performance.
  • Must be able and willing to provide support in an On Call capacity as requested
  • Expertise in one or more specific spacecraft subsystems, and willingness to become proficient in all spacecraft subsystems.
  • Computer experience is required to operate various satellite operations ground systems.
  • Intermediate Excel programming skills, including macro development experience, desired.  Unix, Matlab, Visual basic and Microsoft Access programming skills a plus.

It would be nice if you had:

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following spacecraft designs and operations:  BSS, SSL, Orbital Science, Thales or Astrium.
  • Ability to draft specifications and evaluate proposals.
  • Project scheduling and coordination.
